Where it comes from

01A fragile stomach
I had stomach pain my whole childhood. People called it a fragile stomach.
At 23, they finally put a name on it. Ulcerative colitis.
I was given treatments. Never an explanation.
After a year, maybe two, I stopped waiting for mine. I changed my studies to go and find it myself.
02Fifteen years in the making
A fragile stomach means “it’s nothing.” Except that while it was nothing, it kept going.
Fifteen years of digestion that is not right are not fifteen years of discomfort. They are a microbiome growing poorer, a gut wall that is never allowed to close, an inflammation that becomes the body’s normal state, and a metabolism that learns to run that way.
Nobody ever looked. There was nothing to look at, since it had been decided that it was nothing.
My illness did not arrive at 23. It took fifteen years to build, in front of everyone.
03Two questions, not two diplomas
I changed my studies twice, until it became an obsession: understanding what was happening in my body, what had triggered it, and what could get me out of it.
First, to learn how to build what did not exist.
Then, to understand why nobody had built it.
04A chain of events
And I finally found, not a cause, but a chain of events.
A gut wall that no longer closes. Fragments of bacteria passing into the blood, where they have no business being. Defense cells, the macrophages, that see them and switch on. An inflammation that never goes down, because what switches it on comes back at the next meal.
That day I understood the only thing that matters: the body has no compartments. What happens in the gut decides what happens in the blood, in the hormones, in the head.
“I was given a name because my inflammation was strong enough to be seen. Most people carry the same chain, just below the visible threshold. So they get their results back with the words “everything is normal.””
